The Beauty of Darkness

We are taught to fear the dark—to associate it with the unknown, the hidden, the shadowy corners of ourselves we dare not face. Yet, in its embrace lies a profound beauty, a sacred stillness, a gateway to transformation.

Darkness is the womb from which all life emerges. Before birth, we float in the quiet void, nourished in the unseen. Seeds break open in the depths of the earth before they ever touch the sun. The cosmos itself was born from infinite blackness, birthing stars that illuminate the heavens.

In the dark, the senses awaken. We listen more intently, feel more deeply. Stripped of distractions, we meet ourselves—our rawest truths, our unspoken desires, our unhealed wounds. It is here, in the silence of the unknown, that alchemy happens. That which was buried rises. That which was lost is found.

Spiritual awakening does not come from avoiding darkness but by walking through it, hand in hand with trust. The night sky is not empty; it is filled with galaxies. The shadows are not our enemies; they are our teachers.

Darkness is a tantric practice…. The word tantra comes from the Sanskrit root “tan” meaning “to extend” or “spread out” and “tra” meaning “instrument”. Therefore, Tantra literally means the “instrument for expanding” the level of consciousness from the ordinary to the extraordinary, with self-realization, the realization of the highest truth, as the ultimate goal. Tantra also means “loom” or “weaving”, which is related to the fact that tantra teaches that the universe is a web where everything is connected and interrelated.

Tantra sees the universe as an interplay of consciousness (Shiva) and divine energy (Shakti), both are divine principles but are in fact the same thing. The goal is to come to the highest consciousness of unity. In order to open up to these higher levels of consciousness, many practices from Kundalini yoga (the yoga of energies) are used in tantra, for example, asanas, certain pranayama techniques, holding mudras (hand gestures) and bandhas (energy locks in the body) and the Concentration on the chakras.
